Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

Background on Conviction
